Inside Carrot: 3 Leadership Lessons From The Front Lines Of Customer Success

Customer Success Post HeaderWorking the front lines of any business can feel like you’re the grunt worker or the person that’s completely expendable. You’ll hear folks tell you to delegate basic tasks and hire someone who can help answer client questions. That these tasks aren’t the ones that will take you to the next level.

Because of this perception, being hired or working those support-based positions can seem like a chore or like it’s the bottom of the rungs on the corporate ladder, but we believe differently at Carrot. We believe that you can’t have a great product or team unless it starts from those initial interactions — which is why it’s best to hire great leaders, even on the front lines — because the front line is where leaders are built.

I could dive into many reasons this is applicable but will limit this to three leadership lessons that I — Andre, a Customer Success Hero — have learned at Carrot from helping our team answer over 100 inquiries every single day.

Customer Success Lesson #1: Put Yourself In The Place Of Your Prospects

In support, we throw out a lot of information immediately and it can even be overwhelming if you have used websites before and focused your efforts toward online marketing.

It’s drastically more confusing if you have never touched a website before. And then you login and see our system… and holy cow!

Imagine all of the terms we will throw your way — from setting up a domain and seeing TTL, CName, 301 redirects, MX Records, A Records, IP Addresses. Then imagine hearing about keywords and keyword phrases, longtail and shorttail, and trying to decipher if they’re the same things and which you really need to use. Then you have SEO for real estate and PPC for real estate, Paid Traffic, Retargeting, USP, and so many other terms! Where do you start? Where do we start?

That’s kind of what it feels like when you’re asking support teams questions, isn’t it?

You’ve faced this in the real estate industry, as well. Typically, it happens when a motivated seller approaches you and they’ve reached a point of being overwhelmed and need help — quickly! Let’s face it, supporting those you serve and your business is all about triaging and facing each situation with brand new eyes and an open heart.

And above all, understanding where that person is coming from and their experience level. Here are a few ways to help put yourself in someone else’s shoes and find a way to best serve them:

    • Ask clarifying questions.
    • Find out what problems the person is experiencing.
    • Find out what interests they have/what excites them.

When you take the time to get to know your prospects — their story and hopes and dreams — then you know how best to approach someone’s situation and what their next step and yours should be.

Customer Success Lesson #2: Be Lovingly Honest

You can’t buy everyone’s house. You can’t work with every investor. And Customer Success teams have difficult conversations. One conversation we have regularly is when we find copyrighted information and have to respond. When people scrape our site and content, the support team has to tell them to take the content down. And, as you might expect, that’s an uncomfortable conversation to have.

One day, I found myself in a situation where it was an actual Carrot customer that was scraping our content. That’s a big no-no. Our terms explicitly prohibit this.

What’s worse? This person had been a customer for about two years.

It was a hard conversation and not one that I looked forward to pursuing. But I ended up having a lot of empathy for him and I desperately wanted to find a solution — even though what he was doing was technically illegal. I reached out and told him the pages would need to be removed and he agreed but was shocked that this was the case when he was a customer. And I understood… it’s a very grey line.

After lots of thought, both in and out of the office, the support team didn’t find an answer for over 48 hours and I was concerned about how we could help the customer without offending our policies.

    Finally, I had it!

Although it was the end of the night when I came up with the idea, I woke the next day invigorated and wrote him back and, saying, “Here’s what you can do: You can add a link on your site menu to our own website content.”

Of course, we don’t have all the answers immediately, or even at all, but it’s important, to be honest with yourself, your company, and – most importantly – those you serve. Even if that honesty is hard.

And always make sure to balance that honesty with a healthy dose of empathy and — dare I say? — love.

    • Tell folks “yes” or “no” and try to find a solution or coach them on what’s best for the end game.
    • There is always a way, but you may not always have the solution or be able to help. Accept that.
    • Offer what you can, but don’t jump the gun on making commitments before you know what you’re capable of doing.

Customer Success Lesson #3: Learn To Say You’re Not Perfect

I’m definitely not the perfect example for performance at my job and I know it. Not every batter hits a homerun… sometimes you strike out.

Okay. I’m not the worst. But there are definitely days that my support conversations just don’t go like I want them to.

When I feel elated, I often wonder who I could have helped better. When you’re in the business of relationship, you’re gonna let people down. It’s important to recognize your strengths but, most importantly, to recognize that you’re gonna suck and it’s going to be difficult to admit it.

This is the reason why so many of us on the success team have our strengths and we all rely on one another to be the best foundation for Carrot and our partners and members. We make errors every day — sometimes every minute — such as misreading a name or misunderstanding a customer.

But sometimes, we make large errors.

I have missed calls with clients because a meeting ran long or I didn’t check my calendar. I have attached domains and broken domain emails because I forgot to review if someone had certain integrations.

Sites have been upgraded to include new features and all changes weren’t discussed… but reverting was impossible. There have been times when billing errors were been made on our support team and it’s never a good thing to take someone’s money.

Heck, there was even this time that I made a billing mistake.
    lesson in customer success
We don’t want to be awful and we definitely want to do the best at our job that we can possibly do, but we make our mistakes. The important thing is to acknowledge your mistakes and admit them. If you can say that you’re not perfect, it opens the door for building a relationship.

    The point?

You have to put yourself out there.

    • Admit when you’re wrong and move forward.
    • Stop dwelling on your mistakes.
    • Allow other team members to do the same thing.

    Conclusion

    I hope this helps.

Working on a Customer Success team’s front lines means you will have hundreds of conversations a day and you will be able to build relationships. It is a sure-fire way to get much-needed practice in both conversational and time-management skills.

It’s challenging but very rewarding to witness when a person’s dreams come to fruition — when a lead comes in on a site you helped create. Or when a house sells and the family can finally have closure. Even cooler: when a first deal is made from a site lead.

The point is, at Carrot, we all lead in our own right.

If you want to join us, then consider applying to our customer success team here; but only if you’re ready to lead. :-)

  • Announcing Free SSL for Carrot Sites

Announcing Free SSL for Carrot Sites

Carrot now automatically includes SSL with every site!

Supporting SSL https:// for our Carrot member’s sites has been on our radar for a while… it’s definitely one of those items on the todo list when building your own website.

Typically this means heading back to your domain registrar, paying for a certificate, doing some complicated verification steps on your hosting account, some more complicated server stuff, fixing things when they go wrong… then heading back to your registrar each year to pay them some more money and do the process over again for a renewal.

All in all… usually a 1 hour + time commitment and $50+ a year for a solid SSL cert.

At Carrot, Your SSL Cert Is Now FREE!

What is SSL? It stands for “Secure Socket Layer”, and that’s a fancy way to say a website is accessed with https:// instead of http:// and the connection is encrypted between your browser and company serving the website. Read on for more info!
is ssl important for seo real estate

For the thousands of Carrot member sites (and the thousands more we knew would be launched this next year) sending all of our members out there to purchase an SSL certificate to maintain and renew ($$) each year was not the “Carrot way” to do it.

Why We’re Rolling SSL Out Now

Payments, sensitive personal info, and passwords have always been important things that should be encrypted with SSL, but recently there have been another set of benefits for SSL as well.

The first and most important reason is…

    Security

SSL exists to make the connection between you and a website private. Without this, the data you send over the network could potentially be spied on by someone else on your network. This is something web visitors, your web browser, and even Google are looking for more and more and we wanted to get you ahead of the curve.

    SEO

Google is now using SSL as a minor potential ranking factor. There have been reports over the last 6 months of their “fear” that having SSL was required to rank well today and convert a visitor into a lead at a high rate. Our focus has always been on data and performance so we’ve been tracking the trends and just haven’t seen Google rewarding SSL sites over a well optimized Carrot site in the search rankings… YET.

In fact, we’ve seen an uptick in Carrot member websites rankings (often times over an SSL encrypted site). So over the past 4 months we’ve focused our efforts on rolling out other big updates to our platform that speed up your websites even more which Google has been weighting more heavily than SSL for quite some time. At the end of the day, we follow the data vs. the hype and ensure we’re putting you ahead of the curve when it comes to SEO and performance.

SSL will increasingly become a factor Google looks at and we want to continue to see Carrot members at the top of the search results for their terms that matter, we want to give you every edge possible with rankings!

How Adding SSL Can Impact Current SEO Rankings

We make changing your URL from a non-SSL url to an SSL url extremely simple and quick; however, don’t discount the complexity of things going on behind the scenes with this change. There’s a lot that goes on and this is a decently big change in Googles eyes, because you’re changing the URL structure of your website that Google looks at for it’s rankings.

There are many things one would need to do to ensure an SSL is added correctly (we automate all of that for you) but there are still negative impacts that could be had in the short-term with your Google rankings after adding on SSL.

It’s not uncommon to see a website ranking drop after changing the URL structure from “http:” to “https:” and in some cases you may lose a small percentage of “link juice” from your existing backlinks if they link to the non-SSL version of your URL.

But over the long-term we see Google placing more and more importance on SSL in their search rankings and the Chrome Browser security alerts to it’s users that it’s worth the potential short-term hit for the long-term gain.

If your website drops rankings after making the SSL switch try to get your existing backlinks updated to the “https:” version of your URL (if you can’t, no sweat), build new backlinks with the full “https:” URL, and make sure all pages that link to other pages on your site (internal links) use the full “https:” version not your old “http:” version. And last, have patience and just know that you are ahead of the curve and won’t have to deal with it later when Google is really forcing the issue with SSL on websites.

    Speed

SSL creates a different type of connection on the web that allows for some new technology that can speed up page loading. Future proofing Carrot websites and allowing for more performance in the browser is always a win for us on the tech team. This equals less work, less expense, less hassle, and increased performance for you. Oh, and all of that means peace of mind.

Making It Happen for Carrot Members

So, we’ve been biding our time and working toward a solution that fits our criteria for supporting SSL:

    1. Minimize cost for our members
    2. Reduce complexity for setup and renewal
    3. Automation so we can support SSL for all Carrot sites

And we have done that! SSL is now automatic for all new sites Carrot members launch starting Monday this week, and existing member websites can toggle SSL on with just a click from your domain settings.

Have An Existing Carrot Site? Add SSL In Less Than 60 Seconds

    Carrot SSL Settings

Behind the scenes we are working with new technology from the open certificate authority letsencrypt.org, as well as new Carrot systems for automation and background tasks.

Our new systems watch for a new domain on your site, request and validate a new SSL certificate, and then automate the renewal process to make sure your site stays secure and accessible via https.

Great stuff and a technology we have been looking forward to supporting for a long time, with the help of Jason on our development team.

Get SSL On Your Carrot Site Today

As of this week, new sites launched will automatically have SSL configured and enabled by default. We will handle all the renewals and the process is totally seamless on your end!

Already have a Carrot site to transition to SSL? We’ve made it just a click away. Simply head to your site’s domain settings, toggle SSL “on” and hit save. Typically within a few minutes, your site will automatically redirect from http to https URLs.

That’s it! Give it a try today and hit us up on the support team with any questions!

  • [Product Update] Member Site Optimizations

    [Product Update] Member Site Optimizations

The 2017 year was a great year of growth for Carrot! We talked more about that in our year-in-review post, but wanted to take a closer look at some of the technical growth that has come from our development team this year to continue to support the thousands of Carrot websites out there, and be ready for thousands more!

We’ve released and talked about many other features like automatic image compression that give our member’s site a performance edge, but here’s a behind the scenes look at what makes Carrot special and sets us apart from even the most sophisticated hosting service you might get from a “typical” web host.

    Not your momma’s shared hosting

A huge benefit from Carrot’s growth has been the ability to create a full-time development team. Jason joined us full time this year and has tackled head-on the virtual nuts and bolts of serving Carrot websites to your customers.

It has always been important to us that Carrot websites be fast and reliable, and that can’t change as we grow – things should get even faster and more reliable!

You’re in good company on Carrot’s custom AWS powered platform.

    Asset CDN

The first step for us was moving all of your site assets to a distributed CDN (content delivery network). This means once your website is loaded by a visitor, all the images you have uploaded to your site are served from an additional server located close to your visitor.

Faster because we are using a system built for speedy image delivery, and we are spreading the load of serving the whole site onto multiple systems.

Kinda like when they open that fancy new grocery store super close to your house.

    App Cluster

Next, we took that same idea and applied it to the initial load of your website – spread that job of serving carrot sites out to a cluster of servers.

This is like moving from that single checkout mom-and-pop store, to multiple checkout lines at the grocery store.

    Auto-Scaling

Finally, we implemented a system to control the size of our application cluster, so no matter how many visitors (or bots) are hitting your site at any time, we can keep up with the demand and scale up/down our number of servers accordingly.

Like when they open up more cash registers at checkout!

Top of the scoreboard – Pagespeed

Now that we knew Carrot sites were always highly available to visitors, we let Austin take a look at the way your Carrot sites load in your web browser.

What we found is that while Carrot sites performed better than our competitors in tests like Google’s Pagespeed test, we found more room to improve.

Member Site Optimizations: Allowing customization with optimization

Tests like Google Pagespeed are designed to show you how close you are to ideal conditions – this is very hard to get perfect while allowing for customizations!

These perfect numbers are typically achieved by web developers who can control the whole build process of their website – not a user-editable/customizable website platform.

For example, some of Google’s own websites score in the red:

And often times the things that Google’s Pagespeed test are warning about are when members are using Google’s own products like Adwords. So! There is no sense shooting for a perfect score… but the closer we could get, we knew we would be giving our members and their customers the best experience possible.

    Latest Update

    This latest release includes:

    • Asynchronous font loading (so we can keep our beautiful custom fonts without the penalty)
    • A new custom build process to reduce the use of separate JS & CSS files
    • Further mobile optimizations to make sure we are serving optimal image sizes in more places on mobile devices
    • A custom jQuery implementation to allow for the use of custom jQuery Javascript on your site without any delay in page load speed

    The results

For our base sites, this netted an average Mobile Pagespeed scores increase of 26 points, up to 88/100.

And their average Desktop Pagespeed score increase of 15 points, up to 91.5/100.

These scores are fun to look at, but does this translate to more leads? Yeah, probably! We will need to continue to measure over the long term… but it is commonly accepted that a faster website has less risk of visitors on slow connections becoming frustrated and leaving without a conversion, and if Google starts factoring these sores into their ranking algorithm – we’re ready!

    What’s Next?

We’re always looking at what’s next and will continue to monitor and improve our systems and service to keep things fast and modern. We’re finishing out our 2018 product roadmap right now and can’t wait to share even more improvements and new features in the future!

  • What Would You Do With An Extra $100? How Carrot Spread Some Holiday Cheer

What Would You Do With An Extra $100? How Carrot Spread Some Holiday Cheer

What would you do with $100? Now change that idea … What would you with $100 if you had to spend it on a stranger?

Each Christmas, Carrot does this. Each employee is given $100 to spread some holiday cheer!

This year, we captured some our stories It’s not a complete list. Some of the stories didn’t make it into our LivingLife chat, but we all contributed to others. Great work team! These are some pretty amazing, generous, and uplifting accounts.

“We have been looking for a church that we both get a lot out of for a while. We have attended Summit View in Vancouver the last month and a half and are blown away by the people, message, worship, and everything they do for the community.

Last week at church they did a special offering for a few of the charities they support and we donated our $100 to that. We learned that $75 can provide enough resources for a foreign minister to survive for 1 month. So we put our money towards that. – Alex

“A person I once worked with lost her job a little while ago and has 4 young kids. I anonymously mailed her the money in a Christmas card today. I’m very sure she can use it and if felt good to drop it in the mail!” – We’ll keep this one anonymous

“Ok so phase 1 of our $100 giving – we are going caroling tonight to some folks from our church and we stopped and bought each person a poinsettia for the kids to give them.

Phase 2  – we left our waitress a $50 tip at lunch today.

We wrapped up phase 3 last night – Ben really wanted to give the rest to a homeless lady last night. We were planning to buy someone dinner but he felt like that was where it should go instead. She was so surprised and very grateful. Love this motivation for us all to do a little more each year. Thanks Trevor – and Carrot for helping us all do better.” – Jen

“Meg and I decided that this year we wanted to match our $100 from Carrot, and donate to homeless in the area. So we are putting together some backpacks for the homeless. We got a bunch of supplies and we’re going to be handing out to the homeless on X-Mas eve.. Socks, blankets, some food items that area easy to pack and travel with, bookbag, personal care products, kleenex, chapstick and some other things.. We’ll take some pictures of us handing it all out.. hats and stuff too.

Set our this morning to hand out our bags to the homeless. what a truly amazing experience. To do something that seems so simple to me, and how much it mattered to the people we were helping was inspiring. 10 bags, 10 lives made better on Christmas. Each bag contained:

    -Peanut butter crackers
    -Beef jerky
    -Hats and gloves
    -A fleece blanket
    -2 pair of socks
    -2 bottles of water
    -Chapstick and hand lotion
    -Band-Aids, aspirin
    -Deoderent, comb, toothbrush, and toothpaste
    -Cough drops
    -Plastic utensils
    -Clementines
    -$10 gift certificate to McDonald’s

To see some of the smiles and hear some of the stories was both heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. We tried to engage in conversation with the person we gave a bag to.. we didn’t just want to hand them a bag and move on, we really wanted them to feel like someone cared and just to have a friendly 5-10 minute convo with someone. It was really amazing.

Thank you Carrot and Trevor for giving us the challenge.” – Pete

“I was at Safeway getting some holiday baking ingredients and behind me in line was a young mom with two young kids who had a pretty large cart full of groceries. I just kept that $100 bucks in my wallet waiting for the “right time”. So i told the cashier to use the $100 dollars until it was gone on the people in line.” – Levi

“With the $100 we were given, I took a page out of @Levi’s book and paid for all the people behind me at Fred Meyer on Christmas Eve. In the moment, I had wayyyy too many layers on and could feel that my face closely resembled a tomato, so I kinda bolted out of the store, but it felt really cool to be able to bless some people.” – Danni

“For my $100 from Carrot, I combined it with matching it from my personal and REI. I went around town paying for people’s stuff. I personally would pray and just ask God to help me chose with my heart, not my emotions. It was a great experience, a few memorable moments for sure.” – Adrian

“2017 was a tough year. Our family experienced more deaths and illnesses than anyone should experience in a short time. One of those was my girl’s buddy. It was their idea to help out pets in need. So, first, we donated to our vet, who donates to a different organization than the humane society. Then, our next stop was to our local humane society. They get donations all of the time but were very grateful and happy that we were there. Our vet didn’t know what to say, he was speechless… he must not get direct donations too often.

We also made a match and spent an evening shopping for Toys for Tots. We couldn’t leave out children whom’s Christmas morning might have been a little bit more fun.” – Brendan

“We matched and donated our Carrot cash to the county food bank. While we did not have a chance to personally get out in our community with our health issues over the holiday, this was a simple way to get some literal carrots into our community.” – Chris

    “What to do with $100?

I’m not a local here, so no familiarity with organizations or anything. I asked around and nothing really struck me. Then I tapped my VFW buddies.

They turned me on to Vic. He is a Veteran and father of six kiddos. No idea whether the wife/mother is in the picture.

Several months back they’d tried doing a benefit ride for him with nominal success. Apparently, after returning stateside, he battled with a significant leg wound (work induced?) which ultimately resulted in amputation.

Now this story came to my attention several weeks ago (when I got the money) and I’ve been trying like heck to get it to this guy.

After talking with Marty, who told me to talk to Bill, who told me he’d connect me with his sister (didn’t happen)… I was going to go down to the VFW Post this weekend when I finally got a response.

I finally put the money in an envelope, gave it to Johnna who will give it to Bill tomorrow that will pass it on to Victor and his family.

There is one family out there right now that will be able to buy some groceries, pay a utility bill, or whatever. They have a rainbow in their cloud and I am selfish because I’m stupid thankful y’all gave me a chance to help make that happen. Thank you.” – Janel

    “What I did w/ my $100 smackaroos.

Well… first off we continued our tradition of the last 3 years of doing “Flowers for Other Grandmas”. I took a bunch of Instagrams of the day but didn’t save them. shoot! But all 3 kids went w/ me and we delivered about 40 bouquets of flowers to the gals at the old folks home. We got lots of hugs and one grandma chased us around and got 2 rounds of hugs… then chased me across the parking lot in her walker w/ her dog to tell me my rear light was out and how much she and the other gals appreciated and were blessed by us being there. that was awesome!

Then for the $100… I taught my kids about being generous and giving. I kinda pressured myself a bit this year and didn’t do amazing things like you all did (@pete you took it over the top man!) but I had the kids find people doing things that day that were exceptional and give them big tips and tell them thank you and Merry Christmas.

We gave the pizza delivery gal a $40 tip… she delivered pizza at 6:30 on Christmas eve in a beat up car and that $40 made her night. she almost cried.

A trio of people were at Fred Meyer playing violins (Christmas music) inside the store and it added such an amazing ambiance to the store I loved it and the kids did too. So McKinely went up and gave them a $20 and told them thank you for playing such great music. And we did the same a few other places. it was fun seeing the kids do that. when I gave her $20 to give to them she said… “Dad, this is a $20… are you sure you want me to give this to them?” and we talked about how much joy they were brining to people and it was well worth the $20.” – Trevor

We really wanted to give the money to a family who is undergoing a couple of medical emergencies this year. – Andre

I know that I can speak for everyone at Carrot when I say that we are all so grateful for having the opportunity to be part of a team that is striving to help the lives of others. Whether it’s via an online platform or in our local communities.

    Thanks, Trevor and Team!

  • NEW: Announcing VideoPost – Turn Your Videos Into SEO Content In Minutes…

NEW: Announcing VideoPost – Turn Your Videos Into SEO Content In Minutes…

    Automatic Video Transcription

This blog post took us 80% LESS time to create than a normal blog post… because we did it with the assistance of Carrot’s new VideoPost tool. See what VideoPost is, and how it can be a game-changer for your content marketing in 2017.

We’re insanely excited to announce a brand new feature. We’ve actually been using this process to cut our content marketing time down by 80%, increase our traffic, and help our clients do the same.

I’m going to walk you through this new feature that we call VideoPost, what it helps you do, and how we came up with this content marketing method to automate and make your life simpler.

    Introducing Carrot’s Automatic Video Transcription… VideoPost’s

VideoPost helps you turn simple videos into powerful written content that Google loves in just minutes vs. hours. 3/4 of this blog post was created with our VideoPost feature, saving us over 60 minutes vs. writing manually. Let’s dive in to see how you can start using VideoPost today.

(click to play video, OR read the article below)

VideoPost came about by us trying to solve our own problem a year and a half ago.

As you know, it takes time to sit down and craft content or it takes money to hire it out to have someone else do it. Content and SEO are our number one source of leads here at Carrot, but it’s also the number one source of leads for our Carrot clients.

We know that content marketing is effective in the real estate market, but can we put out great content with less time and energy?

    So we asked the question…

How do we make it so it’s so simple and easy that you want to do content every single week?”

Especially when you’re in competitive markets, one of the best ways to crack through that clutter and to gain an advantage is to build credibility and your expertise.

And the best way to do that is through content, except most people don’t have the time to do written content.

VideoPost Simplifies All Of That For You – An Example: G. Stiles Realty

real estate agent content marketing ideas
    G. Stiles is the largest independent broker in Douglas County, Oregon… and an AgentCarrot client. See how they used VideoPost to streamline their content marketing…

Let’s say you’re in a small town like Roseburg, Oregon. This is actually one of our AgentCarrot client’s G. Stiles, and they were having a tough time with their content marketing strategy as well.

We went to them and we said…

“Hey, go out on site and film a short 3-8 minute video walking people through some information that’s going to help them and be useful for them in that scenario.”

One of their specialties is in farmland and in some other agricultural-type properties, so they went there, filmed the video, and then uploaded it to YouTube.

We then had the video transcribed word for word and made a blog post for them (this was before our VideoPost feature, so it took a bit longer).

Here’s Denny’s Three And A Half Minute “On The Job Content” Video

He recorded it of him on the farmland giving tips and talking about buying farmland in Roseburg, Oregon.

    G. Stiles Realty - (541) 672-1616 - Denny Kruse - Things to Consider When Purchasing Farmland

We Then Turned The Video Into A Content Rich Article That Google Loves

This particular example was long before we created VideoPost to automate the process.

We then manually submitted it to a transcription service, brought it back, copied and pasted it into their blog, bolded a couple of things for readability, separated some of the paragraphs, put a link in there, and then we put a clear call to action at the end of it.

Less than five minutes of editing in total. About 30-45 minutes to submit the video for transcription, pay for it, get it back in a Word document, bring it to their Carrot site, and manually remove the weird formatting that can come from copying and pasting content from Word documents. (again, today, VideoPost automates most of this and brings the process down to less than 5 minutes).

Then we used our SEO tools here in Carrot to make sure it was optimized for search engines for the phrase “buying farmland in Roseburg, Oregon” and all related phrases in the area.

Carrot's VideoPost gives both SEO benefits and credibility benefits.

    The Results?

Within weeks, this blog post started to climb in the rankings.

    website-ranking-in-google-with-transcription-post

As of the time I recorded this video, their blog post from this process is ranking over big websites like LandWatch, and Land and Farm, and Zillow, and LoopNet, and Realtor.com, all from a little piece of short video content.

Now, is this particular search getting tons and tons of searches per month? The answer is of course not, but as a part of a cohesive strategy to really go in there and swarm and dominate your market, you want to be going after the most competitive search phrases of course, but also you want to cast a wider net with these more niched down search phrases.

If you do just one video post per week, over the course of a year that’s going to be 52 new pages on your website to potentially rank in front of your best prospects.

You will cast a wider net out there to grab more searches, build more expertise in your market, become the leading expert in that market to where everyone knows, likes, and trusts because they see your information everywhere they go.

How Do We Automate This And Make It Simpler With VideoPost?

It takes under 3 minutes to create a VideoPost in your Carrot account, then edit it as much or as little as you want (we suggest basic edits to make it visually more easy to read with sub heads, that’s it!). If you’re a Carrot member already simply…

    1. Log in to your Carrot website and click “New Post”, then VideoPost…

    2. Confirm the transcription purchase and click Start Transcription!

By automating your transcriptions into our VideoPost format, it saves you 15-45 minutes vs. having to manually use transcription services. If you value your time at just $100/hr… that time savings alone is worth $25 – $50 to you. If you value your time higher, your savings are even larger.

The average VideoPost should be 3 – 8 minutes long, meaning a cost of only $3.75 – $10 per content piece. Compare that to $30 – $75 to outsource to a writer, VideoPosts are a huge time savings and direct money savings every time you use it.

    3. Within 24 hours (usually within several hours) your VideoPost is complete and ready to publish

Once your VideoPost is complete, with your transcription added, your post created in our VideoPost format (title, intro paragraph, video, transcription, and call to action)… we’ll email you your new post for review and you can then make any edits to the post you want. No more logging into transcription services and copying & pasting transcriptions… that’s a waste of time. VideoPost does it all for you.

How To Get Extra SEO Juice From Your VideoPost

How well Google ranks your VideoPost depends greatly on the content in the video and the small quick tweaks you can make inside of each VideoPost.

To make sure to squeeze all the on-page SEO juice out of this VideoPost here are a few things you can do…

    • Make sure when you’re recording your video, you know which types of searches you want to go after in Google… then use those words in the video. If you’re going after “Portland Oregon river homes”… you’ll want to make sure to say those words. You have to remember to say the things that you’re showing in your video.
    • Go through and format the post so it’s nice and easy for a user to read (this will help with bounce rate). No one wants to read a wall of text.
    • Find some key areas to add <h2> and <h3> tags.
    • Can you link to other content you have done on your site?
    • Make sure to include a call to action at the end (how do they contact you if they have questions or want an offer?)

And last… make sure to use our Carrot SEO Tool to dial in the content for a specific search phrase.

    video seo real estate
Dial in the SEO on your VideoPosts with the Carrot SEO Tool whether you’re an SEO expert or not.

VideoPost vs. Manually Using Transcription Services

When we were doing this process the manual way… we submitted it to a service called Rev.com, then we had to manually do every other step to get the content from Rev.com into our blog editor. This still took us 30-45 minutes to do. Yes, better than 1-2 hours to write an article, but still too long for most people to fit in on a weekly basis.

Now, with the VideoPost feature, this is only going to take you as much time as it does to film your video, log into your Carrot account, paste in a URL, and click a button – we do the rest.

We go out and get the transcription and then notify you when the transcription’s inside of your account ready and formatted in our special “VideoPost” format.

VideoPost Automatically Structures Your Content Flow Properly

Once our system gets the transcription of your video back, we automatically build it into our VideoPost format for you. First, your SEO optimized blog post title, then a short summary of the video, next your video, the transcription, then a simple call to action. All automatic.

This step alone will save you 10-15 minutes. What will you do with that extra time? Get a workout in? Call a prospect and land a deal? Meditate on the day and get clarity? You can do whatever the heck you want while VideoPost does that part of your content creation for you.

    video blog post structure

How Much Will You Save With VideoPost? And What Can You ADD To Your Marketing Efforts?

VideoPost will enable you to do more content, do more robust content, get your brand, your face, your content in front of your prospects so you build up that expertise with your market.

It’s going to save you hundreds of dollars per month when you just do one blog post per week.

I’m predicting for this next year that those people who are out front building their expertise and building their credibility with content are the ones that are going to win the game in a competitive market.

If you do one video post per week, that’s 52 new pages on your website over this next year.

That’s 52 new chances to cast a wider net to get in front of your prospects. Every single time your prospects search different things in your real estate market… like “buying farmland in Roseburg, Oregon”, they’re going to see you over and over again. It’s going to add up in their mind that…

“Man, this person, this company is a really reputable company, they’re an expert.”

Not Sure What To Make Videos About?

That’s the easy part. You’re already creating hours of content every single day… you’re just not documenting it so others can get value from it. But here are some ideas…

    • On The Job Content – next time you’re out in the field, whip out your cell phone and document the situations you’re in, and answer your prospects questions
    • Here is a list of 101 blog post ideas that you can make a video around
    • Testimonials – ask a recent seller or buyer to allow you to film them and ask them about the process
    • Case Study – this is similar to a testimonial but maybe you just talk through the process
    • Market Trends & Updates – find a report online and share your expertise or opinion about it on video
    • About Us – make a video about how your company was started and who you want to work with

At the end of the day, just be useful and valuable for the people that you can best help. Answer their common questions in videos, educate them on things they’re searching for, and have fun with it!

Now it’s time for you to dig in and launch your first VideoPost!

Not a Carrot client yet? Head over to our Plans page and pick the Carrot plan that best fits your goals.

Already a Carrot client? Sweet! The VideoPost feature is ready to use… just hop into your Carrot account and put it to use!

As you dive in and use VideoPost, please send us feedback on ways we can make it even better. There are things on our roadmap already for adding more power and simplicity to VideoPost, so we’re excited to make this one of the most useful tools in your content marketing arsenal in this next year.

  • How To Build Local Real Estate Citations For Agents & Investors

How To Build Local Real Estate Citations For Agents & Investors

Local real estate citations are an important local SEO ranking factor and an integral piece for your real estate marketing framework.

Along with other factors such as backlinks, local citations are one of the leading ranking factors for search engines to decide on the relevance of your website for local search results.

Basically, a real estate business that is consistently mentioned on other trusted and relevant websites achieve higher rankings in search results than a business that is never mentioned.

Obviously, ranking high for search results means that more potential leads will find your real estate website, which will have a positive impact on both on and offline traffic, branding, and conversions.

Use the following local real estate citations tips and add them to your Local SEO Tips for Your Real Estate Marketing playbook.

Doing this ONE SIMPLE THING may help push you over the edge and could very well be one of the most effective SEO things you do this spring.

Get an advantage with your Carrot site and learn how to drive quality traffic to your site.

What Are Local Real Estate Citations?

First, don’t confuse citations with links.

Remember, citations are just mentions of your name, address, and phone number. Google will increase your business’s relevance and strength within your specific city or region.

Yes, some of your business listings within the citation sites include a link to your website, but very few contribute to any Page Rank or “link juice”. Basically, you are claiming your digital footprint with Citations.

    Moz explains local citations as:

Citations are defined as mentions of your business name and address on other webpages—even if there is no link to your website. An example of a citation might be an online yellow pages directory where your business is listed, but not linked to. Citations can also be found on local chamber of commerce pages, or on a local business association page that includes your business information, even if they are not linking at all to your website.

Citations are a key component of the ranking algorithms in Google and Bing. Other factors being equal, businesses with a greater number of citations will probably rank higher than businesses with fewer citations.

Citations from well-established and well-indexed portals (i.e., Superpages.com) help increase the degree of certainty the search engines have about your business’s contact information and categorization. To paraphrase former Arizona Cardinals’ coach Dennis Green, citations help search engines confirm that businesses “are who we thought they were!”

Google is always looking for websites that are real. Citations are one way to show Google that you’re a legit and real company.

Why Are Local Real Estate Citations So Important For SEO?

So, why are building citations for local SEO so important?

One reason is the vastly growing mobile search factor. According to a study done by Search Engine Land, 78% of local searches on mobile and 61% of local searches on laptops resulted in offline transactions.

Mobile devices (not counting tablets) account for over 56% of our member leads. There will continue to be a steady rise in consumer and company adoption of mobile devices.

It’s not a question anymore if mobile is important for real estate. It’s here and you MUST pay attention to it.

Another reason: Citations Correlate with Search Rankings

Local citations improve your search rankings through ongoing creation of relevant and consistent NAP information (name, address, phone number) across hundreds of websites, also known as citation sources.

The more consistent, relevant and localized your citations are, the more likely your business will be at ranking for people searching for your services and products in your area. Citations are basically another source of credibility that both Google & Bing consider when your business NAP is consistent across the web.

What Is NAP And Why It Is Important

The number one most important thing: Make sure your NAP is 100% correct every time.

    DON’T GET IT WRONG

Overall, the biggest contributor is the citation. There is link value within your listings that help strengthen the association of your website with your NAP information.

    So, what is NAP?

NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone Number. It is a crucial piece for any business who is striving to rank well in the local organic search results.

Search engines like Google take your information into account when determining which companies to show for local, geo-targeted, searches.

Again, it’s extremely important that you make sure your NAP is 100% correct. That takes into account, both your NAP on your website as well as any other sites that you have your information on throughout the internet.

It’s a consensus that local SEO experts believe Google, Bing, and all of the other search engines link your NAP information across websites that contain this information as a validation that you are a real and legit business.

The more localized citations you can build up with consistent NAP information, the better your chances are of ranking higher.

You should enter your NAP information into a directory with a strong reputation. This is especially true with real estate specific directories and/or your local directories.

What Happens If Your NAP Isn’t Consistent?

Before You Dive Into Building Your Local Real Estate Citations

Prepare yourself by using this little cheat sheet of the most commonly asked for pieces of information.

    • Your Name
    • Company Name – The company’s exact name
    • Email Address – Your email that will be connected to your business
    • Address – The company’s exact address
    • City – The company’s exact city name
    • State- The state the company resides
    • Zip – The zip code of the company
    • Phone Number – The local phone number of the exact business location
    • Company Website Landing Page – The landing page for the business

Set up a dedicated email address

Don’t use your main email address or your personal one.
These business directory websites usually make money by trying to sell advertising services.
So you may start to get a lot of “junk” email and some solicitation phone calls. The calls will tail off within a month or two, but the emails can really fill up an inbox.
Use the email address to confirm submissions, then let it capture the sales emails so it doesn’t clog your normal inbox.

How Long Does It Take To See Results?

If you decide to take on citations yourself, it takes about 3-6 hours for the building process.

To get started, go to each citation website and submit your listing.

It varies on how long it’ll take per submission, but plan on 10-15 minutes each. You’ll be required to confirm each submission in the dedicated email account you setup.

Some listing go live fast, others may take weeks, others months. But the majority of them should be live within 2-5 weeks.

    In general, SEO Rankings take:

Zero Competition Market: 2-3 Months (if there’s zero competition there’s usually not much opportunity)

    Small Competition Market: 6-9 Months

    Medium Competition Market: 1 Year

    High Competition Market: 2+ years

Typically if you’ve done them right and you’ve completed 40+ on quality sites… you can see a ranking improvement within 2-3 months. That is assuming all other elements on your site are optimized for real estate SEO.

Make Your Own Website Your Best Citation

Make it really easy for Google to identify your website with your citation profile. Most likely the best citation you can start with is your own contact page.

Be sure to have your company name, address, and phone number on there.

Bonus Tip: Add the embed of your Google Places map to help Google further tie your website to that company name and location.

Grab the Google Map “Embed Map” code and paste in into the HTML section of your website. And, this will take about 60 seconds to do it!

Real Estate Citations Frequently Asked Questions

Question #1: How fast will SEO be impacted?

Two to three months is about the time SEO could start showing an impact. Although it might not be dramatic at first. As stated above, there is a chance that highly competitive markets will take longer. Many, many months, if not years.

Question #2: Should I trickle citations out slowly or do them all at once?

Nope – you can do them all at once if you want. There is no evidence that speed of citation claiming will harm your SEO. It is not like backlink building where you can do it wrong.

Question #3: What if I use a tracking phone number for online marketing?

Overall… be sure to use the same phone number for citations that is soon your Contact Page of your website.

You can still have a tracking number in your calls to action and at the top of the site, but it’s suggested that your main company phone number is on the Contact page – therefore matching citations.

Question #4: Should I use a keyword as my business name?

    Ideally… NO.

You’ll see some people ranking well with their Yelp or Facebook pages because they used a keyword as their company name.

Unless that is your company name or domain name, don’t do that.

Go with your actual company name or “Doing Business As” (DBA) name.

Question #5: What if I haven’t filed a business name yet?

If you’re serious about this business…

…you need to make that mental commitment of making it real and filing your business with your state.

If you can’t commit to that, it will be difficult to commit to the hard work it will take to succeed as a real estate entrepreneur.

So go out there and file your company name and get that done!

Verifying Your Citations For Real Estate And NAP

Not sure if you correctly submitted your citations? There are online tools that can help you find your listing all of your NAP citations.

Companies such as Whitespark feature easy to use citation finder tools.

Usually, you’ll need to enter some location data into the citation finder tool and you will get back a list of citations pertaining to the entered business and location.

Once you get the data back check the consistency of your NAP.

If there are citation websites that don’t have your correct business name, address and/or phone number then you should start reaching out to these sites or getting site access to update your citation.

    Your goal is consistency.

Spelling mistakes or minor inconsistencies in your business name can have an impact on your local search rankings.

If your location is listed as Blvd on one website and as Road on another website, correcting this can have a huge impact.
